2020 #HeartWVB Conference Awards Announced
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Heart of America Athletic Conference has announced the 2020 Heart Women's Volleyball All-Conference honorees and winners of the major postseason awards. There were 14 players selected to each the First Team, Second Team, and Third Team with an additional 13 recognized on the Honorable Mention Team. Heart newcomer, Park University, captured four of the seven specialty awards after posting a spotless 12-0 conference record in the fall. The Pirates are currently ranked in the top 50 for ten different statistical categories and lead the nation in kills per game (14.57). Park's Nada Meawad was recognized as the Heart Player of the Year and Heart Attacker of the Year after a phenomenal senior campaign with the Pirates. Meawad currently leads the nation with 6.33 kills per set and ranks second with 291 total kills on the season. Teammate Amanda Mendes, who currently leads the nation with 12.15 assists per set, was tabbed as the Heart Setter of the Year. Head coach Mike Talamante rounded out the major award winners for the Pirates after being named the Heart Coach of the Year.
Missouri Valley's Allie Grelle and Evangel's Eryn Russell were selected as Heart Co-Defenders of the Year. Russell, a junior libero, finished the fall season leading both the conference and the nation with 6.82 digs per set. She totaled an impressive 382 digs during the shortened fall season. Grelle, a junior middle blocker, leads the conference and is ranked second in the nation with 1.59 blocks per set. She collected an impressive 78 total blocks in the fall, 16 of which were solo.
Central Methodist's Annabelle Maassen and Grand View's Chevy Wagner-Chun will share the Heart Freshman of the Year title after standout seasons for their programs. Maassen finished the season with a .209 hitting percentage while averaging 1.85 kills per set as an outside en route to a 9-3 league record for the Eagles. Wagner-Chun finished league play averaging 4.388 digs per set and led the Vikings from the service line. Grand View's assistant coach, Makani Cantor, was also selected as the Heart Assistant Coach of the Year.
