Central Methodist University captured the 2026 Heart of America Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Championship on Sunday, defeating No. 1 seed Missouri Baptist University in a dramatic 7-5 comeback victory in the title game.
Missouri Baptist struck first, but Central Methodist answered early in the championship matchup. In the first inning, Maddie Holly tripled down the left field line to bring home an unearned run and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Missouri Baptist responded in the third with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1, then took control in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on a series of timely singles to build a 4-1 advantage. The Spartans added another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-2.
Central Methodist began chipping away in the bottom half of the fifth, cutting the deficit to 5-2 on an RBI groundout by Kaysie Jolley.
Still trailing heading into the seventh, the Eagles delivered one of the biggest innings of the tournament. Elizabeth Palumbo launched a three-run home run to center field to tie the game at 5-5. Moments later, Emma King followed with a two-run homer to right field, putting Central Methodist in front for the first time since the opening inning at 7-5.
From there, the Eagles' pitching staff closed the door to secure the championship.
Central Methodist's path to the title included a 6-5 opening-round win over Mount Mercy, a 2-0 shutout of Grand View, and a 13-1 run-rule victory over Missouri Baptist in the winners bracket final. Missouri Baptist advanced to the championship after a 3-2 semifinal win over Grand View.
With the victory, Central Methodist finishes the tournament as champions and continues its recent dominance in conference play, securing its fourth Heart tournament title in the last five seasons.
The win also earns Central Methodist the Heart's automatic bid to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Softball National Championship.
The NAIA Softball Opening Round is scheduled for May 11–14 at campus sites, with the 45th annual NAIA Softball World Series set for May 21–27 at the South Commons Complex in Columbus, Georgia.
