Outdoor Track & Field Accolades Released
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - After a successful weekend of competition at the 2019 Heart of America Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Champions, the conference accolade winners have been named.
Men's Track Athlete of the Meet – Deterio Newman (MNU)
Newman earned 1st place finishes in the 200m (21.81), 400m (47.81), and the 4x400m relay (3L15.40). Newman also ran as an anchor for the 4x100 (5th, 42.49). He secured NAIA "A" Standard qualifying times in the 400m and 4x400m relay.
Men's Field Athlete of the Meet – James Plummer (GVU)
Plummer earned 1st place finishes in the shot put (17.02m), discus (53.78m), and hammer (57.49m). He continued to build on a successful senior campaign by hitting NAIA "A" Standard qualifying marks in all three events.
Men's Head Coach & Assistant Coach of the Year – Head Coach Jerry Monner (GVU)/Assistant Coach Seth Roberson (GVU)
Monner and Roberson led the Vikings en route to defending their title at the outdoor meet. Grand View posted a total of four 1st place finishes and collecting 58 points in the three big throwing events.
Women's Track Athlete of the Meet – Gloria Mares (Baker)
Mares earned 1st place finishes in the 200m (25.15), 4x100m (47.99), and the 4x400m relay (3:54.57). She also posted a 4th place finish in the 100m with a time of 12.46. Mares and the Wildcats hit two NAIA "A" Standard marks in the relay events, also setting a new meet record in the 4x400.
Women's Field Athlete of the Meet – Shelley Laures (Benedictine)
Laures earned a 1st place finish in the heptathlon with a final total of 4443 points, breaking a meet record that was set in 2011. She also took second place in the javelin (38.50m) and fourth place in the high jump (1.54m).
Women's Head Coach & Assistant Coach of the Year – Head Coach Nate Weins (MNU)/Assistant Coach Jonathon Becker (MNU)
Weins and Becker were tabbed with the honor after leading the Pioneers to their second-straight conference title. MidAmerica Nazarene has won the title for the third time in four years. The squad also claimed a total of six gold medals through the two-day event.
